Today’s topic – What is social media marketing and which social media channels are best to start with?
Building and managing an online version of self, in particular through social media, is called social media marketing. It is different than being online because you are expected to (regularly or frequently) interact and build a rapport with people called fan or followers.
Social media can be used in a variety of different ways, like promoting an offline business, creating a community, personal branding, professional services, launching an event or product, boosting sales with exclusive discount offers, etc. It is actually a rather diplomatic way to direct conversation and/or sales toward your own brand.
Once you figure out a sweet-spot between what to share and where, it can actually be a profitable investment. However, it’s no quick magic. Social media takes time as does SEO, but results will be there for you to see.
So, then the question comes down to which social media channels are important to you? Well, the answer lies within the query. It’s you, the business. You could default start with Facebook (numbers have it), Twitter (#LIVE updates and information) and LinkedIn (if you are into #B2B). Or, you sit down with a marketing person and do some brainstorming.
Knowing who you are as a business and whom you serve to is a good starting point. Once you actually start doing it, you can test other platforms important for your audience. Rest assured, social media marketing isn’t as easy as you may think. There are specialists out there who could do it for you. Hire one when you feel there is too much on your plate. By the way, I’m a marketer :). Howdy?
